Illustration 3 General Topics: Riot in United Kingdom

In August 2011, several London districts of cities and towns across England suffered widespread rioting, looting and arson.

It happened after a peaceful on 6 August 2011 in relation to the police response to the fatal  shooting of Mark Duggan by Metropolitan Police Service firearms officer on 4 August 2011. The riot began in Tottenham, North London. In the following days, the riot spread to several London boroughs and districts and eventually to some other areas of England.  The most severe disturbances occurred outside London in Bristol and the cities in the Midlands and North West of England.

The riots were characterised by rampant looting and arson attacks of unprecedented levels. As a result, British Prime Minister David Cameron returned early from his holiday in Italy. The other government and opposition leaders also ended their holidays to attend to the matter as well. All policemen and the Parliament was recalled on 11 August to debate the situation.

As of 15 August, about 3,100 people had been arrested, and more than 1,000 had been charged.  There were a total 3,443 crimes across London linked to the disorder.  Five people died and at least 16 others were injured as a direct result of related violent acts. An estimated 200 million worth of property damage was caused, and local economic activity was significantly compromised  The riots have generated significant ongoing debate among political, social and academic figures about the causes and context in which they happened.

Personal Thoughts:  To be honest I didn’t know what cause the riot.  But I learned about it through a friend of mine.  The riot was approximately ten minutes away from where he lived.  It eventually started moving towards a town another friend of ours.  My concern for the both of them got me interested.  I think it’s crazy and from the details, it kind of difficult to point out the exact cause of it.  I read a few articles and some even suggest gangs started it.  But either way it’s ridiculous and extremely dangerous.  Too many families suffered and people were killed in the incident.  Shouldn’t have gotten that bad.
